Background of the Study
Traditional institutions—such as councils of elders, community chieftaincies, and indigenous governance systems—have historically played a pivotal role in shaping regional development in Nigeria. These institutions continue to influence resource management, conflict resolution, and the formulation of local development agendas (Eze, 2023). In an era marked by rapid modernization and centralized economic planning, the integration of traditional leadership into formal regional economic planning processes has become increasingly significant (Afolabi, 2024). Contemporary research suggests that these institutions provide culturally relevant mechanisms that enhance community participation and social cohesion, thereby fostering economic initiatives that are both contextually appropriate and sustainable (Okonkwo, 2025). However, the evolving socio-political landscape has also raised concerns about the relevance of traditional institutions in the face of modern bureaucratic systems (Ibrahim, 2023). This study critically evaluates how traditional institutions are being incorporated into regional economic planning, with a view to identifying best practices and potential areas for reform (Babatunde, 2024). By examining case studies from various Nigerian regions, the research aims to shed light on how these age‐old structures can be harmonized with contemporary economic policies to promote inclusive growth (Chukwu, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite their recognized importance, traditional institutions often struggle to assert influence within modern regional planning frameworks. Conflicts between customary law and statutory regulations have resulted in tensions that undermine collaborative development efforts (Nwosu, 2023). Additionally, the marginalization of traditional voices in decision‐making processes has led to policies that may overlook culturally specific needs and conflict resolution mechanisms (Adeniyi, 2024). The erosion of indigenous governance structures, coupled with rapid urbanization and external political pressures, further complicates their role in economic planning (Ola, 2025). As a result, many communities experience a disconnect between formal development initiatives and traditional practices, which can hinder the effective implementation of regional policies (Udo, 2023). This research seeks to investigate the dynamics between traditional institutions and modern planning bodies, to pinpoint the structural and operational challenges that limit their contribution to regional economic development (Ike, 2024).
